Student Organizations
Students are encouraged to actively participate in professional/technical organizations. These organizations provide an opportunity to improve their communication, management, and leadership skills.
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is a professional organization with a student chapter at LSU. We strive to familiarize the students with the profession and job opportunities by inviting professors, professional engineers, and organizations to speak at our bi-monthly meetings.

Dedicated to the purpose of maintaining and promoting the status of Civil Engineering as an ideal profession, Chi Epsilon was organized to recognize the characteristics of the individual Civil Engineer deemed to be fundamental to successful pursuit of an engineering career, and to aid in the development of those characteristics in the Civil Engineering student. Engineering is assuming an increasing responsibility for the physical well-being of all people, and thus calling for competence of a high order. This responsibility can be discharged only by a professional group whose members are possessed of a good basic technical ability, intelligence, moral integrity, and effective social poise in their relationship with a larger community of which they are a part. To contribute to the improvement of the profession, Chi Epsilon fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and technical ability among Civil Engineers, and its members, by precept and example, toward an ever-higher standard of professional service.

Students pursuing this minor will be better prepared for careers in structural engineering. The minor will provide students with a technical and competitive edge over most traditional civil engineering undergraduates in the structural engineering job marketplace.
Catalog Statement
To earn a minor in structural engineering, a student must complete CE 3415, CE 4400, CE 4410, CE 4430 or CE 4460, CE 4435, and two additional courses chosen from an approved list (CE 4420, CE 4440, CE 4450, and no more than one of CE 4300/CE 4310/CE 4660.) The additional technical/design/analysis electives are available in the dean’s office. A grade of “C” or better in each course is required.

To Declare the Minor
Please see one of the counselors in the College of Engineering office (2228 Patrick F. Taylor Hall). The minor must be officially declared in your student record before you graduate in order for it to become part of your transcript; simply completing the courses is not enough. Please note - declaring your intention to pursue the minor does not obligate you to complete it.

Fastest Track to Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Structural Engineering
The structural engineering minor is composed of 21 hours. Six of those hours, Structural Analysis I (CE 3415) and Reinforced Concrete Design (CE 4410), are required courses for the BSCE degree. This means, in essence, that the minor requires 15 ‘extra’ hours related to structural engineering. However, the BSCE degree includes 12 hours of civil engineering electives. By carefully selecting those electives as outlined below, it is possible to graduate with the Structural Engineering Minor by taking as few as three hours beyond that necessary for the BSCE Degree. The fast track to complete the minor requires students to take CE 3415 and CE 4410 as early as possible in order to meet the prerequisite requirements for subsequent electives.
The BSCE degree requires three hours of Design electives, three hours of Design or Analysis electives, three hours of Project electives, and three hours of Technical, Design, or Analysis electives. Choosing Design, Analysis, and Project electives as indicated below satisfies the BSCE degree and Structural Engineering minor requirements. The only difference is that the minor requires six additional hours of technical electives, whereas the BSCE degree requires just three.

A grade of "C" or better in each course and minimum 2.0 GPA in the minor courses are required.
To earn a minor in surveying, a student must complete CE 3500, CE 4500, CE 4520, CE 4530, and CE 4550. The State of Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:693.B(3b) and (4f) specify the educational requirements necessary for licensing as a Professional Land Surveyor. Additional courses will be required by the board for the land surveyor license. A list of required and elective courses may be obtained from the Louisiana Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors registration board (LAPELS).

Professional Licensure and Certification
Licensure as a Professional Engineer is available for undergraduate students majoring in civil engineering and environmental engineering and is achieved in two steps, namely Engineer-In-Training and then Professional Engineer. However, our program does not directly lead to such licensure or certification upon graduation. As an ABET-accredited program, the professional preparation you receive in our programs meets the educational requirements for licensure as a Professional Engineer, therefore it should assist you in such pursuits. However, the licensing authority and requirements for Professional Engineers falls under the jurisdiction of the licensing board for the state, territory, or foreign entity in which you practice. For example, engineering licensure in Louisiana is governed by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying (LAPELS) Board. If you intend to pursue such credentialing in your state or elsewhere, we strongly advise you to contact the applicable state credentialing authority to familiarize yourself with its specific requirements. Alternatively, you are welcome to contact Dr. Suresh Moorthy (moorthy@lsu.edu) with questions in this regard, and we will do our best to assist you in your career planning.
