Dr. Irving is a PhD trained exercise physiologist, with advanced training in i) endocrinology
and metabolism, ii) skeletal muscle physiology, and iii) stable-isotope methodologies.
He is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology at Louisiana State University (LSU).
In August 2015, he joined the LSU faculty after serving three years as the founding
director of the Geisinger Obesity Institute’s Metabolic Phenotyping Laboratory. Prior
to joining the Geisinger Obesity Institute, Dr. Irving was an Assistant Professor
of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He completed postdoctoral training under the direction
of Dr. K. Sreekumaran Nair in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Irving's laboratory is interested in developing a more thorough understanding
of the short- and long-term metabolic and proteomic adaptions to exercise, dietary,
medical interventions in young and old adults at risk for or with cardiometabolic
diseases. Specifically, Dr. Irving is interested in skeletal muscle adaptations that
provide protection against cardiometabolic diseases (e.g., type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular
disease, and peripheral vascular disease). His laboratory is also interested in understanding
the independent and combined effects of prolonged sitting and physical inactivity
have on skeletal muscle and whole-body physiology. Finally, Dr. Irving's laboratory
is interested identifying mechanisms of exercise intolerance and functional impairment
in overweight/obese older adults.
